The New Nintendo Console Wii U

The new home console is titled Wii U, "a system we will all enjoy together, but also one which is tailor-made for you," said Reggie Filch-Aime, president of Nintendo of America.
The Wii U will be available in 2012. Pricing was not announced.

The key component of the system is a new controller that is a hybrid of a tablet and an older game pad. The controller includes a 6.2-inch touchscreen, which can actually replace the TV, two analogue sticks, a microphone, a camera, and the usual directional buttons.

The controller is not a portable device, though, as anything on its screen is served by the Wii U console.

It doesn't invalidate the motion-sensing controllers introduced by the Wii, but adds to the possibilities, and all Wii controllers, including the balance board and the Wii Remote, will be compatible with Wii U and the new controller.

There were plenty of ideas about the kinds of gaming experiences that will become possible with the Wii U, including one player doing something on the tablet controller while a second player uses the Wii Remote to do something on the television on screen.
